Watermelon Agua Fresca

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Who’s feeling thirsty for a light and refreshing drink for the warmer days ahead? This watermelon agua fresca fits the bill.

Agua fresca is a light fruit drink, as much water as juice. Watermelon and cantaloupe is commonly used, but any fruit will do.

Refreshing homemade watermelon agua fresca with lime and mint

This drink is popular in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean—and for good reason. It’s refreshing in these hot climates.

I use club soda to add bubbles and lighten the watermelon juice. When added to the glass right before serving, the club soda retains its fizz.

Let’s have a glass of agua fresca and imagine we’re sitting on a Caribbean beach!

Watermelon Agua Fresca

  • 4 cups diced, peeled watermelon
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 4 mint leaves, plus sprigs for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup
  • Club soda or sparkling mineral water
  • Ice

  1. In a blender, puree the watermelon, lime juice, 4 mint leaves, and the agave syrup at high speed until smooth.
  2. Strain through an ordinary collander into a large bowl. Discard the seeds and any pulp.
  3. Transfer to a pitcher and refrigerate for 1 hour or longer.
  4. To serve, fill glasses with ice. Fill 1/3 of the glass with club soda, and the remaining amount with the watermelon mixture. Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy!
